Vedantu's Revenue Climbs 17.6% to Rs 267 Crore in FY26 as Losses Narrow

India's edtech sector has gone through a difficult period over the past few years, with several major players rethinking their business strategies amid changing market conditions. While Byju's collapse and Unacademy's acquisition by UpGrad have reshaped the industry, Vedantu appears to be making gradual progress towards improving its financial position.

The Bengaluru-based edtech company recorded revenue from operations of Rs 267 crore in FY26, marking a 17.6% increase from Rs 227 crore in FY25. Its financial performance also showed improvement at the operating level, with losses before exceptional items and tax declining during the year.

According to the company's consolidated financial statements reviewed by Entrackr, Vedantu's latest results indicate that it is managing to grow its revenue while keeping its overall expenditure largely under control.

Tuition Fees Continue to Drive Revenue

Tuition fees remained Vedantu's biggest source of income in FY26. Revenue from this segment increased 16.8% to Rs 222 crore, compared with Rs 190 crore in the previous financial year.

The company also recorded growth in its other revenue streams. Income from books, uniforms and other products rose 31.8% to Rs 29 crore, while revenue from e-learning projects stood at Rs 6.3 crore.

In addition to its operating revenue, Vedantu earned Rs 3.8 crore through non-operating income. This brought its total income for the financial year ended March 2026 to Rs 270 crore.

The growth across its major revenue segments suggests that the company is continuing to generate income from its core educational services while also benefiting from its additional offerings.

Employee Costs Decline Despite Higher Outsourcing Expenses

Vedantu's overall expenses remained largely stable in FY26, although there were some notable changes across individual cost categories.

Employee benefit expenses, which accounted for the largest share of its expenditure, declined 12.8% to Rs 191 crore from Rs 219.5 crore in FY25. This figure includes Rs 7.2 crore in expenses related to employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), which are non-cash expenses.

However, the company saw a considerable increase in its spending on contract and outsourced resources. These expenses rose 54.3% to Rs 71 crore during the year.

Depreciation expenses moved in the opposite direction, declining 5.8% to Rs 65 crore.

Vedantu also increased its advertising and promotional expenditure by 7.4% to Rs 29 crore, indicating continued spending on marketing and attracting students. Meanwhile, technology-related expenses stood at Rs 12 crore.

Despite the increase in outsourcing and advertising costs, Vedantu managed to keep its total expenditure almost unchanged at Rs 442 crore in FY26.

Vedantu Brings Down Losses by 18.6%

The combination of higher revenue and relatively stable expenditure helped Vedantu reduce its losses during FY26.

The company's losses before exceptional items and tax declined 18.6% to Rs 171 crore, compared with Rs 210 crore in FY25.

For this comparison, exceptional income and expenses arising from changes in the fair valuation of consideration payable have been excluded from both financial years. These adjustments relate to changes in the estimated value of the company's future financial obligations.

Excluding these items provides a clearer picture of how the business performed through its regular operations.

Vedantu also reported an improvement in its expense-to-operating-revenue ratio, suggesting that it has made progress in managing the costs associated with generating revenue.

Its financial position at the end of March 2026 included cash and bank balances of Rs 77.25 crore. The company's total current assets stood at Rs 160 crore.

Although the company continues to report losses, the reduction in its pre-exceptional losses is an encouraging development as it works towards improving its financial performance.

Competition Intensifies in India's Edtech Market

Vedantu's financial improvement comes at a time when the Indian edtech industry looks very different from what it did during its rapid expansion phase.

The collapse of Byju's and Unacademy's decision to join UpGrad have significantly changed the competitive landscape. With some of the industry's earlier major players facing difficulties or restructuring their businesses, competition has become more concentrated.

Physics Wallah remains one of Vedantu's key competitors, particularly in online education and test preparation.

However, the priorities of the industry are also changing. During the earlier funding boom, several edtech companies focused heavily on rapid expansion and acquiring new users. The current market is placing greater importance on student outcomes, affordable pricing, operational efficiency and the ability to build a financially sustainable business.

For Vedantu, maintaining its position will require more than simply increasing enrolments. It will also need to strengthen its educational offerings while ensuring that its costs remain manageable.

Vedantu Raises $11 Million from Existing Investors

In September 2025, Vedantu raised $11 million from its existing investors as part of a larger funding round led by ABC World Asia. Accel India and Omidyar also participated in the round.

The investment comes at an important stage for the company as it continues to strengthen its business amid growing competition.

The additional capital could support Vedantu's efforts to improve its educational offerings, expand its reach and compete more effectively with Physics Wallah and other players in the online learning market.

With the sector becoming more focused on sustainable operations, how companies use their available capital will be just as important as how much funding they raise.

What Lies Ahead for Vedantu?

Vedantu's FY26 performance points towards a gradual improvement after a challenging period for the broader edtech industry. The company has managed to increase its revenue while keeping overall expenses largely flat, resulting in a meaningful reduction in losses before exceptional items and tax.

However, sustaining this progress will remain a challenge. The company will need to maintain its revenue growth, improve cash flows and continue managing its operating costs as competition intensifies.

Physics Wallah's position as a publicly listed company also adds another dimension to the competition. While being a public company brings greater financial scrutiny and market expectations, it can also encourage greater discipline in business operations.

Vedantu, meanwhile, has the flexibility to pursue new opportunities without facing the same level of public-market scrutiny. Whether this becomes an advantage will depend on how effectively the company uses that flexibility to strengthen its business.

The latest results suggest that Vedantu still has room to make a stronger comeback. If it can maintain its current momentum, the company could deliver further improvements in FY27 or FY28.

For now, the key question is whether Vedantu can turn its improving financial performance into sustained growth and, eventually, profitability.
