Hero MotoCorp Plans to Scale Vida EV Production to 80,000 Units a Month by Q2 FY28

Hero MotoCorp is preparing to significantly expand its electric two-wheeler manufacturing capacity as demand for its Vida electric scooters continues to rise. The company plans to increase its monthly production capacity to 45,000 units by the end of March 2027, followed by a further expansion to more than 80,000 units by the second quarter of FY28.

Hero MotoCorp CEO Harshavardhan Chitale said the company is facing supply constraints as demand for its electric two-wheelers outpaces available production. Dealer inventory currently stands at around one day, indicating limited stock across its retail network.

Rising Demand Drives Capacity Expansion

Hero MotoCorp has already doubled its monthly electric two-wheeler production capacity from 15,000 units at the end of FY26 to 30,000 units currently.

The company is now working towards reaching a monthly capacity of 45,000 units in the fourth quarter of FY27. Based on current demand trends, it plans to raise this figure to more than 80,000 units per month by Q2 FY28.

Chitale said the low level of dealer inventory reflects the supply limitations the company is experiencing, despite strong interest in its products.

India’s Electric Two-Wheeler Market Gathers Momentum

The expansion comes as electric scooters gain a larger share of India’s two-wheeler market. Electric vehicles now account for more than 20% of the scooter segment, highlighting the growing shift towards electric mobility.

Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) showed that electric two-wheeler registrations rose 33% during the Navratri period to 75,758 units. In contrast, overall two-wheeler registrations declined by nearly 3% to 8.34 lakh units during the same period.

Leading manufacturers are increasing production to keep pace with the market’s growth. TVS Motor currently leads the electric two-wheeler market, followed by Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp.

TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto are aiming to reach monthly production capacities of 80,000 units by March, while Ather Energy is targeting capacity of around 95,000 units between July and September through its new manufacturing facility.

Competition Intensifies as Manufacturers Add Capacity

According to Chitale, the electric two-wheeler industry as a whole is struggling to meet demand. He noted that manufacturers capable of bringing additional production capacity online quickly could gain market share, provided their products appeal to customers.

The capacity expansion is therefore expected to play an important role in Hero MotoCorp’s efforts to strengthen its position in the electric mobility market.

Vida Retail Network Set for Further Expansion

Alongside increasing production, Hero MotoCorp is looking to widen the distribution network for its Vida electric scooters. The brand is currently available at around 700 of the company’s retail outlets.

Hero MotoCorp has approximately 8,500 points of sale across its wider network, leaving considerable room to expand Vida’s presence. Chitale said further retail expansion would help the company reach more customers and support the brand’s growth.

With production capacity set to rise and distribution expected to widen, Hero MotoCorp is positioning its Vida business to capitalise on the growing demand for electric two-wheelers in India.
