Shopify is preparing to introduce its accelerated checkout service, Shop Pay, in India, with the launch expected in the first quarter of 2027, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans.
The move could put Shopify in more direct competition with India’s growing list of checkout technology providers. The company is also discussing integrations with payment orchestration platforms to connect Shop Pay with payment service providers in the country.
Shopify has not yet publicly confirmed the India launch timeline. The company had not responded to questions about the planned rollout at the time of publication.
SHOP PAY COULD LEVERAGE SHOPIFY’S EXISTING INDIA MERCHANT BASE
Shopify already has a large base of Indian direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands using its platform to build and operate their online stores. These existing relationships could give Shop Pay an immediate pool of potential merchants when the service launches locally.
Shopify’s platform allows businesses to create online storefronts, manage products and orders, and connect payment and other commerce services.
The company’s entry into accelerated checkout could intensify competition among providers such as GoKwik, Shopflo, Razorpay and Shiprocket, which offer tools designed to simplify checkout and improve conversion for online brands.
WHAT SHOP PAY BRINGS TO THE CHECKOUT EXPERIENCE
Shop Pay is designed to make online purchases faster by allowing shoppers to save important checkout details, including payment, shipping and contact information.
Once these details are stored, customers can use them for quicker purchases at participating stores instead of entering the same information repeatedly.
Shopify says Shop Pay can generate conversion rates as much as 50% higher than a standard guest checkout experience.
The service would complement Shopify’s existing native checkout rather than necessarily replacing it. Its success in India is likely to depend on factors such as available payment methods, local integrations, pricing and the features Shopify offers specifically for Indian merchants.
SHOPIFY’S ENTRY COULD SHAKE UP INDIA’S CHECKOUT MARKET
India already has a competitive checkout technology ecosystem. Players including Shiprocket’s Fastrr Checkout, Razorpay’s Magic Checkout, Cashfree Payments, GoKwik and Shopflo are working with online merchants to improve the buying experience.
Shopify’s arrival could be particularly significant because many merchants using competing checkout solutions may already operate their stores on Shopify.
That creates an unusual competitive dynamic: Shopify could potentially compete with companies that provide additional services to merchants running on its own commerce platform.
Industry observers believe the impact will vary from one provider to another. Some companies rely heavily on checkout products, while others have built broader businesses around areas such as customer engagement, payments, returns and shopper intelligence.
GoKwik, for example, offers services beyond checkout, including customer engagement, shopper identification, advertising and returns management.
Shopflo is also part of Pine Labs, which acquired the company in 2026 as part of its broader expansion across payments and commerce.
Shopify’s strong global brand could give Shop Pay an advantage, but merchants are unlikely to choose a checkout solution based on brand recognition alone. Pricing, payment options, operational tools and the overall value offered will also influence their decisions.
PRICING AND PAYMENT INTEGRATION WILL BE KEY
One of the biggest unanswered questions is how Shop Pay will be priced in India.
Shopify has yet to disclose its India-specific pricing. Merchants evaluating the service would need to consider not only any checkout-related charges but also payment-processing costs and other transaction fees that may apply.
Payment integration will be another important piece of the rollout. Shopify is reportedly speaking with payment orchestration platforms about connecting Shop Pay with payment service providers in India.
For existing Shopify merchants, a closely integrated checkout product could be attractive if it delivers faster transactions without adding significant costs or operational complexity.
At the same time, competing providers will have an opportunity to differentiate themselves through services that go beyond accelerated checkout. Features such as payment orchestration, return-to-origin intelligence and other merchant-focused tools could remain important factors in the market.
Ultimately, Shopify’s entry is likely to give Indian D2C businesses another checkout option. While its established merchant ecosystem and global presence could help Shop Pay gain traction quickly, its actual impact on the market will depend on its pricing, payment integrations and the capabilities offered to Indian merchants.
