SEBI Warns Investors About Fake Stock-Tip WhatsApp Groups Using Misleading Profit Claims

India’s market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), has warned investors about fraudulent WhatsApp groups that promote stock tips and trading advice using fake testimonials and fabricated profit claims to appear trustworthy.

The regulator said some unregistered individuals are operating invitation-only WhatsApp groups under the pretext of offering free investor education. These groups often use international phone numbers and pose as experienced stock market professionals to attract unsuspecting investors.

How Fraudsters Create a False Sense of Trust

According to SEBI, operators of these groups sometimes work with other members who post misleading messages about investment gains and praise the person presenting themselves as an expert.

This practice, known as astroturfing, involves creating the illusion of genuine public support through fabricated endorsements. By making the group appear credible and successful, fraudsters attempt to persuade members to follow their stock recommendations and trading calls.

SEBI has also highlighted how these groups try to retain members after authorities or social media platforms take action against them.

Members may receive messages from unfamiliar numbers inviting them to join a replacement group. The operators often claim that the previous group was suspended or banned because of restrictions imposed by the social media platform.

Such messages may promise regular stock recommendations and trading guidance in the new group. SEBI has cautioned investors against treating these explanations as genuine, as they could be part of a broader attempt to continue fraudulent activities.

SEBI Advises Investors to Stay Alert

The regulator has urged investors to avoid joining private WhatsApp groups run by unknown individuals, particularly those who claim to be market experts and contact people through overseas numbers.

Investors should also be cautious about messages in which group members celebrate profits, endorse an administrator or share apparent trade confirmations. According to SEBI, these posts may be deliberately planted to create a misleading impression that the recommendations are reliable.

Messages announcing that a group has been closed, suspended or banned, followed by an invitation to join another group, should also be treated as warning signs.

The regulator has further advised investors not to open accounts with trading platforms or applications promoted through such groups. Transferring money to these platforms without proper verification could expose investors to financial losses.

Protect Trading Accounts and Personal Information

SEBI has warned investors against sharing details of their investment portfolios or trading accounts with the operators of these groups. Such information could be misused, potentially putting investors and their funds at risk.

To reduce the chances of falling victim to these schemes, the regulator has advised investors to conduct their market transactions only through SEBI-registered intermediaries and use genuine trading applications.

Investors can check the registration status of intermediaries through SEBI’s official website before engaging with them.

The advisory is intended to prevent investors from acting on unverified stock tips and trading recommendations circulated through closed WhatsApp groups. SEBI has urged market participants to remain vigilant and verify the credibility of investment-related advice before making financial decisions.
