Microsoft Introduces Voluntary Exit Offer for Eligible Employees in India and Three Other Countries

Microsoft has introduced a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) for eligible employees in India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. The programme will provide financial assistance and career planning support to employees who choose to leave the company.

Announced on October 26, 2026, the initiative is designed to give employees greater flexibility in planning their careers while helping Microsoft adjust its workforce to changing business requirements.

According to reports, around 60,000 employees globally may be eligible for the offer. However, the company has not disclosed how many employees in India will qualify.

Who Is Eligible for Microsoft's Voluntary Exit Offer?

The programme is open to eligible employees at internal job level 70 and below in participating teams across the four countries. It is a time-limited initiative, and participation will depend on the requirements of individual business units.

Microsoft's Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer, Amy Coleman, announced the programme in a communication to employees. She explained that the offer would provide an option for employees considering opportunities outside the company to make the transition with financial and career-related support.

The programme will not be available across every team or department. Eligibility will depend on factors such as business priorities, customer commitments and workforce requirements.

Employees who qualify will receive an email containing a link to the details of their individual offers.

What Benefits Will Employees Receive?

The voluntary exit package is expected to include financial support, health insurance and career transition services. Reports indicate that the package for eligible employees in India may include one month's base salary for every completed year of service, although employees will need to refer to their individual offers for the applicable terms.

Eligible employees in India are reportedly expected to decide whether to accept the offer by December 1, 2026.

The programme gives employees the option to leave voluntarily rather than requiring them to exit the company. The number of employees who ultimately accept the offer remains uncertain.

Microsoft's Workforce Changes in 2026

The announcement follows other workforce changes at Microsoft earlier this year. In May, the company planned a voluntary buyout programme for around 8,750 employees in the United States. In July, it announced job cuts affecting approximately 4,800 positions globally, including roles associated with its Xbox gaming business.

Microsoft is also investing heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, cloud computing and related technologies. These investments are part of the company's broader efforts to expand its AI capabilities and meet growing demand for computing resources.

The latest voluntary exit initiative builds on Microsoft's earlier voluntary retirement programme and offers another way for the company to adjust its workforce without making every departure compulsory.

Microsoft Reaffirms Its Commitment to India

Despite the workforce changes, Microsoft has reiterated its commitment to India's technology ecosystem and talent development.

A company spokesperson said Microsoft has committed $20.5 billion in investments between 2025 and 2029 to support cloud and AI infrastructure, skills development and operations in India.

The company also remains on track to fulfil its commitment to equip 20 million people in India with AI skills by 2030.

Microsoft has approximately 23,000 employees in India, although the exact number eligible for the voluntary exit programme has not been disclosed.

Supporting Employees Through Career Transitions

Coleman said the new initiative reflects Microsoft's effort to provide employees with greater flexibility while responding to changing business needs. The company also intends to continue helping employees develop new skills and explore internal career opportunities where appropriate.

Microsoft has indicated that the programme is a new approach that it will assess as it progresses. Its implementation will vary across teams rather than follow a uniform company-wide policy.

For eligible employees, the offer provides an opportunity to consider their next career move with financial support and transition resources. For Microsoft, it offers another mechanism to align its workforce with evolving priorities as the company continues to expand its investments in AI and cloud technology.
