In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) new data center and Cybersecurity Training Institute. The facilities, which cost Rs 169 crore to build, are anticipated to improve India's cybersecurity and financial technology infrastructure.
The inauguration was attended by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, Odisha Governor Brajmohan Ram, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, and Deputy Chief Ministers Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida.
The RBI complex is located at Info Valley-II in Jatni and spans 18.55 acres. On March 22, 2023, then-RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das laid the project's foundation stone.
The data centre will house critical payment and settlement infrastructure, along with other key RBI initiatives. It is anticipated that the facility will increase the availability, effectiveness, and dependability of digital financial services.
As India’s financial ecosystem becomes increasingly dependent on technology, the data centre will provide a secure and dependable computing foundation to support its continued expansion.
Officials said the infrastructure has been designed to meet the RBI’s computing requirements while providing a secure, resilient, scalable, and future-ready technology environment for the central bank and the wider financial sector.
Alongside the data centre, the Cybersecurity Training Institute aims to strengthen the financial sector’s ability to address evolving digital threats.
The institute will provide a dedicated platform for cybersecurity and enterprise technology training, research, and capability development. It is expected to help build specialised skills and improve preparedness for emerging technological and security challenges.
The project comes at a time when technology-driven financial services and digital payments are becoming more and more significant to India's economy, necessitating strong cybersecurity and dependable infrastructure.
Officials said Jatni was selected for the project partly because of its geographical advantages. The location is away from seismically active zones and high-risk international border areas, helping reduce exposure to certain natural disasters and geopolitical risks.
The choice of location reflects the importance of establishing critical financial infrastructure in areas that can support operational continuity and long-term resilience.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the inauguration, saying the facility would contribute to the state’s development.
In a social media post, Majhi noted that this was Prime Minister Modi’s ninth visit to Odisha since the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the state government in 2024.
He also said the Jatni facility would be the RBI’s second data centre of its kind, following the one in Navi Mumbai.
It is anticipated that the new infrastructure will assist the security and dependability of India's digital financial ecosystem while bolstering the RBI's technological capabilities.
